The High Street Guide To CBN: Everything You Need To Know

Cannabinol (CBN) may not be the most recognizable compound in cannabis products, but it’s an important one nonetheless. This minor cannabinoid shows up fairly often, and it can significantly influence how you feel when it’s present in your cannabis. Whether you’re looking for deep relaxation or one of the other benefits CBN may provide, this cannabinoid could be a game-changer when shopping in a cannabis dispensary. Read on to learn more about CBN, how it works, and whether high CBN cannabis products may be right for you.

What is CBN in weed?

CBN is a minor cannabinoid found in cannabis, typically in small quantities of one percent or less by weight. CBN is a byproduct of degrading THC and, as a result, is especially abundant in aging cannabis flower. As cannabis is exposed to environmental factors like oxygen, ultraviolet light, heat, and humidity, cannabinoids degrade and break down into other compounds, including CBN.

Of course, there are also varieties of cannabis that are naturally higher in CBN levels, too; just because there are significant amounts of CBN doesn’t automatically mean the cannabis is old. CBN carries with it some properties that certain consumers may find beneficial or desirable, making it an important compound to keep in mind when shopping for cannabis products.

What does CBN do?

Compared to major cannabinoids like Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD), there is comparatively scant research on CBN and how it works. We mostly have animal studies and anecdotal evidence to help us understand the effects CBN might have on consumers. Still, more work needs to be done to develop a complete understanding of this cannabinoid. Fortunately, we do have some insight into how this compound affects consumers, which includes the following:

  • CBN may alleviate pain: A 2019 animal study suggests CBN may be effective for pain management. Researchers observed that the cannabinoid reduces muscle pain in lab rats, suggesting it could effectively manage chronic pain disorders, especially in muscles, nerves, and joints. Researchers noted CBN might be a strong candidate in cases where symptoms are challenging to treat, though they wrote that more research is needed to better understand whether the results would translate well to human patients.
  • CBN may support restful sleep: CBN has long been known as a cannabinoid that promotes feelings of relaxation and drowsiness. Although there is minimal scientific evidence to support this, there are many anecdotal claims by consumers that high CBN cannabis products help them fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. More research is needed to support these claims, but if you’re looking for improved sleep, high CBN cannabis products may be worth a try.
  • CBN may stimulate appetite: A 2012 animal study suggests that CBN may help increase appetite, as researchers observed stimulated appetite in lab rats. The animals given CBN in that study ate significantly more food than the control group, suggesting CBN could be effective for medical patients with reduced appetites. However, the study’s authors note that additional research and human trials are needed to learn more about CBN’s connection to human appetite.
  • CBN may have antibacterial properties: A 2020 scientific review found CBN may be an effective antibacterial. Researchers tested CBN against various strains of bacteria that were resistant to antibiotics and found it was effective at killing those strains. These results suggest CBN could be used as an alternative to antibiotics in some cases, though – you guessed it – more research is needed before it could be used to treat human patients.

While much more remains to be discovered about CBN, we have enough insights to support cannabis consumers’ buying decisions in the dispensary. If the above effects sound appealing to you, consider high CBN cannabis products and see whether they meet your needs. Although researchers are still exploring the ins and outs of CBN, there’s plenty you can learn about how CBN influences your cannabis experience by simply trying new products.

How does CBN work?

Like THC, CBN works by interacting with the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is made up of cannabinoid receptors throughout the brain and body, as well as chemicals called endogenous cannabinoids, such as anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). This system regulates a wide range of important functions, such as appetite, mood, pain perception, mood, and much more—and phytocannabinoids like CBN can influence it as well.

CBN interacts with both the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are the major types of cannabinoid receptors in the ECS. It activates both receptors but especially influences the CB2 receptor, resulting in the range of effects listed above. It’s also thought to influence how the ECS processes THC and can affect how THC works when we consume high-THC cannabis products.

The relationship between cannabinoids like CBN and the ECS is complicated, and researchers are learning more about it every day. What’s clear, though, is CBN can produce effects all its own, as well as alter the way other cannabinoids influence the ECS. This process of cannabinoids influencing one another to change the overall experience is described in a theory called the entourage effect, which researchers are closely examining to learn more about how cannabis could work as a therapeutic and medical tool.
