Nova Farms is one of the great partners whose products are available on the shelves at High Street. As a unique cultivator and manufacturer bursting onto the scene in New Jersey, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate what makes Nova Farms special and why we’re so thrilled to offer their sungrown cannabis products at our dispensary.
Meet Nova Farms
Nova Farms is a relative newcomer to New Jersey, but not the cannabis industry. The company has a strong presence in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island, where it developed, tested, and iterated upon its best practices for growing quality flower. At its core, Nova Farms’s model is about a longtime dedication to the plant and cannabis consumers.
“We’re definitely cannabis people; our roots are in the legacy market and our founding group has been working together for a long time,” said Kyle Miklinevich, VP of Wholesale at Nova Farms. “That bleeds through in a good way — we care about the quality of the product first and foremost.”
While Miklinevich acknowledges that “everyone says that,” he added that the words are put into practice in a real way at Nova Farms. The company is focused on developing “connoisseur” cannabis products, like live resin and live rosin, which preserve optimal levels of cannabinoids and terpenes as they’re found in the plant.
While the business is operational in multiple states, Miklinevich said Nova Farms’s leadership is laser-focused on maintaining product quality and deeply meaningful community partnerships.
“We’re a multi state operator (MSO), but we’re like a speedboat, not a cruise ship,” he said. “We’re privately owned and independent; we’re not beholden to shareholders. We’re cannabis people who grow and sell cannabis because we love it and we’re passionate about it.”
A philosophy rooted in nature, quite literally
Nova Farms does something that most cultivators in New Jersey don’t: they grow their cannabis outdoors. While most cultivators are aiming to grow in highly controlled environments to produce the most aesthetically pleasing buds possible for maximum shelf appeal, Nova Farms has taken a different approach.
“We’re growing in the ground, under the sun,” Miklinevich said. “The plants grow tall and bushy and enormous. Our model is to farm the cannabinoids and terpenes; it’s not just about pulling down flower that looks good in the jar.”
The majority of the flower Nova Farms grows is fresh frozen and sent to the company’s extraction facility to produce cannabis concentrates like butane hash oil (BHO), bubble hash, and live rosin. Nova Farms extracts make it onto dispensary shelves and are also widely used in vape cartridges, edibles, and tinctures.
Best of all, Miklinevich said, the outdoor cultivation method keeps costs low for consumers.
“We don’t have the electricity bills associated with an indoor grow, so we can be competitively-priced while still producing a really high-quality product,” he said.
As a vertically integrated operation, the company controls everything from how the cannabis is grown to how it’s harvested and preserved to when and where it is processed into cannabis products. According to Miklenivich, Nova Farms primarily leverages the hydrocarbon extraction process for its solvent-based extracts and ice water extraction for its solventless products. In the near future, though, Miklenivich noted the company plans to expand into supercritical CO2 extraction as well.
Preserving farms and farming culture
Nova Farms isn’t only focused on growing great cannabis and manufacturing products — they’re also dedicated to preserving local farms in their communities. When Nova Farms comes to town, they make sure they honor and protect the farms that have fed the local community for years.
“We’re not just farming cannabis,” Miklinevich said, “we’re buying family farms and growing produce for the community.”
In New Jersey, Nova Farms maintains a 70-acre farm in Swedesboro, where a 15-acre subdivision is dedicated to cannabis cultivation. There, Nova Farms maintains a 150,000-square-foot canopy, plus additional greenhouse space for raising plants in their vegetative state and auto-flowering plants, cannabis that moves automatically from its vegetative state to the flowering stage. The remainder of their property has continued its longtime operation as a small-scale farm, including a herd of highland cattle, pigs, and other animals.
The company has followed the same model in the other states in which it operates, Miklinevich said. In Maine, for example, the company purchased a family farm and promptly hired the previous owner as the production manager so he could continue to run it as he always has — with the addition of a new cannabis cultivation component.
“Now he’s growing weed and still producing food for the local community,” Milinevich said.
Nova Farms x High Street
Nova Farms was eager to partner with High Street after the teams crossed paths at MJ Unpacked in Atlantic City. It was clear from the first meeting that each understood the importance of expertise surrounding the plant and helping to educate consumers about their options.
“There’re a couple different kinds of cannabis dispensaries,” Miklinevich said. “Some have a good vision and handle on things, and you can tell when the staff is engaged by the questions they ask and what they care about. It was clear right away when working with High Street that they get it.”
The first Nova Farms product available at High Street were its Zzzonked gummies, a line that’s formulated specifically for deep relaxation and restful sleep. Nova Farms also rolled out its Hashables rosin gummies, Meltdown infused chocolates, and Rezzy vapes at High Street.
